The Abandonment and Dissolution of the Council of Gods

The gods of the Empire are known as the Infinite Council, and you are their representatives. Or at least, you are the representative of a minor god, for a minor profession or the near dead god of a colonised land.That isn’t to say that your job isn’t important, but your job calls on you to make alliances, trades, compromises, to get the people you represent what they deserve. 

The important gods have representatives in the main council, known as the council of One Hundred. These days it’s more like five, when you look at the mergers they’ve made, the way their churches own one another down a line in a chain. You can’t move anywhere on the oceans without permission from the god of the waves, whose temples are financed by the church of fishermen, whose livelihoods depend on The Shipbuilder. Everyone is supposed to be represented in the chambers of the One Hundred. But as the empire grew, the times changed over centuries, and the priorities of the people, and of the gods became warped by time and money, a second council was formed. The Council of Hundreds. If a hundred people who worship a god not represented in the council already, want to, for any reason, they can elect a representative to join the Council of Hundreds.

 There are exactly six hundred and five councillors in the larger council at the moment, a hundred and fifty years after its inception. They have next to no power, but a bill can only be submitted by a member of the Council, and to be voted on by the Hundred that bill must first pass the Hundreds. Which takes effort. And backstabbing, and flirting, and all manner of bullshit. Anyone with ninety nine friends can join the Hundreds. There are terrible people here. But there are also good people, people genuinely trying their best. People for whom the ass kissing feels like salt on an open wound, and who sometimes daydream about setting the building ablaze.
